Bonniers Konsthall’s exhibition New Materialism (2018) gathered a group of contemporary artists who work with textiles, clay, wood, and ceramics, and whose practice often involves an exploration of the actual production process.
The book contains texts by Magnus af Petersens, Caroline Elgh Klingborg, Monika Wagner, Joan Simon, and Sofia Victorino, and documentation of artworks by Tonico Lemos Auad, Andrea Büttner, Andreas Eriksson, Theaster Gates, Petrit Halilaj, Katrine Helmersson, Sheila Hicks, Abdoulaye Konaté, Ellen Lesperance, Éva Mag, Britta Marakatt-Labba, Lee Mingwei, and Francis Upritchard.
We decided to work graphically with the texts, using them as raw material to create more or less compact “textiles” by pulling all the lines together on one page. The book also contains a section of quotes rendered on semi-transparent paper, allowing them to visually overlap and, again, interweave.
Three works in the exhibition were of a performative and changing nature so we arranged for the staff at Bonniers Konsthall to use a Polaroid camera to document these works throughout the exhibition period. When visitors bought the book, they got three Polaroids to glue into the book, showing the status of the works on that day.
